The most popular of these is the Leffe Brune, a strong-tasting brown ale with an intense aroma of caramel and hints of roasted chocolate and red fruit; in mouth has a slightly sweet end reminiscent of raisins and spice balanced with dry hops.

Leffe brand is the most famous of all Belgian abbey beers. Unlike authentic Trappist beers, they are not genuinely monastic products but the result of a trade agreement whereby a company can produce beer under license and the benefits are divided between the company and the monastery. The Abbaye Notre Adame Leffe was founded in 1152 in the town of Dinant, near Namur. It began to brew in the s. XVIII, but ceased after the French Revolution.

The Leffe was first produced in the 1950s by a local brewer and, although the relationship with the abbey remains, at present the beers are produced in Artois (Interbrew ownership) in Leuven, near Brussels. Of the other three beers Leffe, the most important is the Leffe Blonde, a pale gold ale with a delicate spicy and fruity aroma, soft-bodied, creamy and strong presence of orange and coriander. The Leffe Radieuse, seldom seen and known as Vieille Cuvée, is a complex beer with a creamy aroma of banana, citrus, coriander and cloves.
